Chapter 13

The food bank was right around the corner, so the drive took less than ten minutes. With Raoulf’s help, the frozen trays changed hands fairly quickly. With the workers preparing for a big dinner this evening, the back area of the kitchen was congested and noisy. Raoulf must have thought so himself because he retreated outside as soon as they were done unloading.

Cheryl, the clerk on duty, handed Nina a yellow slip. “Here’s your donation slip. As always, we appreciate your generosity.”

They moved outside where a few guys were loading some paper products off a truck.

“No problem. And you know I love to cook.”

“I’ll be sure to let the Director know you stopped by today. She’s been asking about you.”

“I told you that I’d be opening my own catering business soon, right?”

“Really? I always knew you had that entrepreneur spirit about you. Congratulations!”

“Thank you.”

“Also who is that man over there that helped you bring in all the food?” she asked, lifting her gaze in the direction of Nina’s Honda.

Nina stole a quick glance at Raoulf. He was patiently waiting and leaning up against the passenger side door. “Oh, he’s just a friend. He’s been helping with some odd jobs.”

“Just a friend?” She cut her eyes. “Ooo girl, he is fine as hell. Where did you find him from?”

Nina blushed. “I didn’t find him anywhere. He just showed up.”

“Mmm-hmm. You’re holding back from me.” Cheryl nudged her. “Does he have a girlfriend or something?”

Nina shrugged. “How would I know?”

“Oh my God, woman. He looks like he’s cornbread-fed and all. Look at those arms on him. Where’s he from?”

“Tennessee,” Nina replied.

“I’m in the wrong state. I don’t know about you, but if that fine thang over there is a single man, you need to snap him up quick and keep him. If any of these single ladies in this city get their hands on that, they’ll go coo-coo crazy over him.”

Nina chuckled. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“But from the looks of it, he’s 100% into you. He’s been eyeing you since the moment y’all both got out of the car. Look at him. Lawd Jesus…”

Another quick look confirmed that Raoulf had fixed his attention in their general direction.

“He’s probably just ready to go,” Nina offered.

Cheryl pressed her lips together and narrowed her eyes. “Mmm-hmm. You’re into him, alright. It’s written all over your face. You think I can’t tell when one of my sista friends likes a man?”

“The only expression written on my face is hunger and I haven’t eaten since earlier this morning. See you next time, Cheryl.”

Nina waved.

“Bye. Bring him back next time too.”

Nina grinned all the way to the car but avoided Raoulf’s arresting stare.

“What was that all about?” he asked, pulling open the car door for her.

“Nothing. We were just talking about next week’s food drive.”

He held his hand against the inside of the car door, preventing her from closing it. “You know what the best part about being a wolf is?”

“What’s that?”

He pointed to his ear. “My sense of hearing.
